570D pump timing


I have a 570D that is running fine except that the pump leaks a bit. Luckily, an extra pump came with the tractor and I have recently had it rebuilt. I've been reading the Service Manual and on pg 61 & 62 they talk about Bosch pump timing. So when I take off the pump front cover, I would expect to see the gears lined up as per picture on top right pg 62 (CS454). I have the flywheel positioned on the timing mark of 26 deg BTDC, and I have the pointer lined up to the timing mark on the current leaky pump's drive gear (as per picture CS453 pg 62). Moreover, I've checked the valve springs for #1 cylinder and they are BOTH loose thus indicating that #1 piston is on the compression stroke and at 26 deg BTDC (per Operators manual).

So when I take off the pump's front cover I would expect to see the alignment in picture CS454 in manual. BUT NO!!! In fact, the pump's timing mark is 11 teeth before the mesh and the camshaft gear's timing mark is 5 teeth before the mesh. So is this leaky pump actually not timed properly? If that is the case, how does it run being so much out of time (apparently)?

So when I install this newly rebuilt pump, do I install it according to how the old pump is installed? or do I try to get the marks aligned as in CS454?

 

 

 PS When I slowly move the crankshaft so that the camshaft gear is at the mesh point, I loose the flywheel timing mark at 26 deg BTDC

Original Conundrum

F marks the mesh point for Flywheel timing

C marks mesh point for Camshaft timing 

C is also the CORRECT position for the pump timing marks but they are 6 teeth out! And this pump is working, but with a leak. Can a diesel engine even fire by being so much (apparently) out of time?

So why aren't the pump timing marks positioned correctly?

 

UPDATE

Little did I realize then that the pump gear can actually be installed at 4 different positions, each 90 degrees apart. Nowhere is this mentioned in the manuals. I incorrectly assumed that the pump gear would be keyed like a camshaft gear (again wrong on my part).

The important part is to have the line and pointer match on the pump shaft when installed with the flywheel at 26 degrees BTDC. That part IS mentioned in the documentation.

When removing those 4 front bolts, that gear just spins to any of the 4 desired positions

 

 

 Lesson?? Live and learn and most of all be patient and ask questions!

I noticed that you said that you said that you had your pump rebuilt.  I have a 570 that's not running right now.  It had a blockage in the fuel line and stopped running.  Tried to get it going with no success, rebuilt the injectors and transfer pump but I'm thinking that the pump is too weak to open up the injectors.  I'd like to get the pump rebuilt but don't know where to send it and what the cost would be.  can you advise.
