Starter motor woes

The starter motor on my E3 cast off some sparks I believe from the switch but the motor still turned over and started the engine...upon attempting to start the engine a second time the starter now does nothing when I hit the switch...I pulled it all out....the starter motor is free though the switch doesn't have a lot of resistance when the button is pushed...NAPA wants over $469 to rebuild my starter completely...ridiculous I say....anyone out there have starter experience or can recommend what I do next....I have a feeling it may just be a bad switch....any thoughts? Many thanks...Jeff

Check the switch first.  They're easy to replace.  Clean the copper contacts and make sure the spring on the INSIDE pushes the copper bar firmly on to the contacts.  Those switches are commonly used.  You just keep the old actuating lever.

Check my reply to our last exchange.

Keep us informed, my starter does nothing and unfortunately the man who knew them is no longer with us. I'd like to get it corrected.

i would search the countryside for a Mennonite that does starter/generator repair and such or talk to a local farmer surely they would know where to go 465 seems way out of line never would have napa rebuild anything for me theyre just sending it somewhere else and charging you a ton for it

Take the switch off and using set of jumper cable hook one end of each to battery, clamp positive cable to starter frame and while holding starter onto the bench or clamp it in a vice and becareful, don't put your hand or fingers into the drive end housing, touch negative jumper cable clamp on the copper or brass connector of the starter!!!!  If the stater is ok it should spin!!!!

Well I got it figured out.....NAPA sent my starter back after I refused to pay for their extreme overhaul cost....and it came with a new starter switch which incidentally did not fit....so I took the old switch and cleaned it up, as well as the copper bolt threads and copper metal on top of the starter.....I replaced the original starter button after a good cleaning, installed the starter and hit the switch....she fired up just fine....so the starter was fine and the starter switch and button just needed a good cleaning....

You could install starter before mounting the switch and use the jumper cables just as you did with the starter off! Make sure the tractor is OUT OF GEAR before contacting the jumper cable to the starter, should crank the tractor (motor) over when you touch the post on starter!!!! If it dose definitely the starter, if it the starter engages but dose not crank the engine then starter could be weak or motor suck!!!!!! Good Luck hope this helps you out!!!!!

Sorry meant to say if dose crank the engine over when you make contact with jumper to starter terminal then problem is likely NOT with the starter!!!! My error!!!!!

My starter spins but not fast enough to engage. the battery is bad, I think it will work ok, I hate to buy the battery now just to confirm since the temps here have been below 0 on a regular basis. I will wait until Im almost done with the rebuild before purchasing the battery.

Has it been that cold down there?  I'm in Geauga county and I expect it.

Be sure the starter drive slides free on the shaft.  Those old 6 volts didn't spin real fast to begin with and there's no solenoid to engage it.  Don't oil it either.

Well my starter gave out again and this time it seemed permanent....so I searched all over the web and finally found a company in Iowa that can get the exact starter....Auto-Lite MAX 4081.....their prices are very good....I got the rebuilt starter for $160 plus shipping....and they will give me a core refund and pay the shipping to return my dead starter to them for rebuilding....my E3 is starting and running again thanks to T.H.E. Company.....ask for a parts fellow there named Alex and he can help with parts needs....

Yeah thanks! The new to me "rebuilt" starter is great....I didn't realize how after 67 years of service, my old original was really tired...this new unit is the exact same model but spins easier and faster.....T.H.E. Company really saved the day for me coz apparently this starter was made specifically and only for this Buda engine....
