rear axle torque setting

My Cockshutt 30 came with a leaking drive axle oil seal. The new seal is on order; what torque do I set the gland nut?  It appear that the previous owner had it too loose.  Thanks.

The manual I have doesn't give a torque for the axle nuts.  It says to tighten the bull gear nut (inner end of axle shaft) to pre-load the bearings so it will take 105 in-lb. to rotate the shaft.  You can only rotate the shaft through the gear backlash.  After it is set bend the washer under the nut to engage the flat of the bull gear hub.  I haven't done this job yet so that's all I can tell you.  I have two E-3s with the same problem.  The shaft runs in tapered roller bearings, tighter nut makes more pre-load.  The seal is not a packing so tightening more will not stop the leak.

I hope this helps,

Mike
