Hi all. I purchased a 1967 Cockshutt tractor last fall, knowing that all the fluids/seals etc needed to be changed. I am getting ready to have her serviced but am questioning the fluids that go into her. My hydraulics ask for Automatic Transmission fluid "type A". I am able to find some of that on occasion or at least I could last fall, at Canadian Tire. I have since been told when trying to purchase some at L&M Fleet the other day, that they no longer make that, and you can use other stuff. WHAT OTHER stuff?? Will a regular ATF work?? is there a name brand?? What do I look for on the label. I think I can use a motor oil too, but so far, I've only used ATF. I am new to the tractor and all that goes along with it, and I really wish to learn.
I would like to gather up as much fluid/greece, lube, what ever as possible before the Mechanic services her and having a list of what will work just the same as it did back in the day would be really helpful.
How have the fluids changed, namely the hydraulic (atf)? What is the difference between actual Hydraulic fluid and Atomatic Transmission fluid?
Please have patience with my silly questions, or if I don't understand what you are telling me. I genuinely don't know the answer, so therefore need to ask...
Type A was replaced by "Dexron" which should be readily available. I was told years ago by an automatic transmission rebuilder that the only difference between GM Dexron and Ford type FA is the anti-foaming spec. He also said if you use Ford fluid in a GM trans it will shift harder. I had a '57 Chev with a LT-1 engine and a 400TH trans so I put the Ford fluid in it and it worked well. I can't say it made a tremendous difference but it did get a good bark when you hit 2nd!
