I need to change the front oil seal on my E3's Buda engine....I saw the earlier post about this but need simply to know which way the hand crank nut turns in order to remove it and thus the pulley behind so i can remove the front cover etc. etc....I think a pipe wrench is the only tool that will grab the nut sufficiently to unwind it....I don't know what this nut is torqued to and may have to resort to locking the wrench on and hitting the starter...just need to know which way to grab the nut so it will unwind and not go tighter...any thoughts would much be appreciated before I break something....many thanks Jeff
the nut is regular right hand thread with a star washer with a lock tab on it if you can get the engine to keep from turning ( i put a prybar on the flywheel ) and turn the nut off with a pipe wrench. be very careful getting the pulley off if its cast it will break very easy if its tin they just bend very easy. originally it would have had a seal and a felt seal since the felt is no longer available you will have room to put 2 new lip style seals in if you need the seals contact me i can get them at 740-262-3987. thanks and enjoy working on a good ole tractor.
I was about to reply, Jeff, but Caleb got there first. The nut is RH, otherwise you would unscrew it if you used a hand crank. I remember the nut being hard to break loose but mainly because it's hard to get a wrench on it in a good position to pull. The pulley came off easy for me. And I don't remember a locking washer. I doubt the starter would do it. Pry on the pulley as close in to the hub as you can. Let me know how it goes.
Thank you Caleb and Mike, that is all very helpful info....I will give it a go and let you know of my success or lack there of....I figured the nut was right hand thread given the way my crank handle locks in...I will make certain that if there is a lock washer, I will open it, and then be gentle with that pulley....many thanks men!
