I have located a Plymouth DLG standard gauge railroad locomotive, abandoned in the woods in North Alabama around 1950, in terrible shape but still possibly restoreable.
The 55HP Buda 4-cylinder gas engine has a corner broken off the head so water has pooled there for no telling how many years.
Otherwise it seems to be sound - needs a starter, radiator, and magneto (know where one can be found). The governor is in place.
As many of these engines as Buda made, putting them in forklifts, tractors, and all kinds of other machinery, surely there is one around, or at least parts, and hopefully a manual.
If this little tug can get a working engine, it will be worth the enormous trouble to retrieve it from its resting place.
The hydrostatic transmission is sealed and probably in perfect shape.
The frame and carriage, axles and wheels are sound.
All the sheet metal has been knocked off and banged around but is present, and can be restored.
I have no knowledge of the machine's history, and haven't found the serial number.
The Plymouth collectors database couldn't find but one sale record for this model and I've not been able to confirm that purchaser as having ever transferred it to my area.
That's looks like one of the letter series Budas. To my knowledge they were not used in tractors. There is a gentleman in Illinois, Chuck Rhoads, who has a good deal of Buda information from the Harvey, Il plant. I haven't been in contact with him for a few years but I'll see if I can find his address or phone and post back here. You could also try posting on the Smokestack forums.
